Verwood 12 Bournemouth University 14
24th November 2007
Saturday 24th October at Potterne Park gave spectators an excellent game of running rugby where both sets of three quarters moved the ball well and only first class tackling stopped this being a cricket score. Ironically the deadlock was, however, broken by a forward when Verwood’s Richard Cooke received a perfectly timed pass from Matt Pike and then sprinted 35 yards handing off the covering tacklers to score. 5-0 Verwood.
With 5 minutes to go before half time Charlie Cockram scored a fine individual try weaving his way passed three defenders to score under the posts. Paul McGuffie converted.
Half time was beckoning and the students who had by no means given up, won turnover ball just inside Verwood’s half and moved the ball swiftly across the three quarter line for Yates to score an excellent try. Yates converted his own try.
Half time 12-7 Verwood.
After the break the excellent play continued with both sides having opportunities but being denied by good solid tackling. With 15 minutes play remaining Bournemouth secured victory with a fine try. After securing ball from a 5 metre scrum, which was by now uncontested due to an injury of a member of the students’ front row, the ball was moved quickly along the three quarters and Frost came off his wing to add the extra man in the line to score an excellent try under the posts which Yates converted.
